Texturing starts with good UV mapping. Maya has gone from a quite mediocre UV editing program to something I now quite like. IT was not long ago you always had to open a third-party application to get decent UV done and no one really looked at Maya for this. Now for the last couple of versions, Maya has poured a lot of work into the UV area.
